Starbase is a game meant for a wide audience, including those who want to play "on their own" or in relative safety, and those who want all-out war whether in small groups or in big faction-wide wars. We expect most Starbase players to fall somewhere in-between these groups.

Our PvP (/piracy) plan is straightforward: First we focus on reasonable safety mechanics for the general playerbase, and then we add incentives for players to take controlled risks to increase PvP encounters.

=== Vouchers during Closed Alpha ===
Origin stations' chat is not a place to advertise any services or trades or similar. We will devise other methods for companies/factions to advertise and sell their services to players. Any continued or 'organized' advertising (such as "one message every 24 hours") will not be tolerated, and neither will any discussion about said services that in any way disrupts the flow of the chat. We will be monitoring the chats and will revise the rules as we go and as the game develops further - but generally just don't advertise in Origin station chats. If a discussion grows naturally, it needs to stop immediately if any player asks for it to stop. Violations will be handled case-by-case but may lead to timeouts (timed bans).

=== Player station safe zone rules ===
== Note on PvP and new player protection ==
As we wait for more granularity in player station safe zone gameplay options:

* Owner of a station is allowed to push unwanted guests out of the safe zone (of the station).
Generally speaking we (the development team) want to protect new players and get them on their space journey without additional burden (the game is hard enough to learn as it is). We want to encourage players to take risks with their possessions to gain something - venturing out into the deeper space with their fancy mining ship in hopes of returning with a big ore payload. If something happens on that journey, well, that's the risk part.
* Owner (and their friends) inside a player station safe zone are to be left alone/in peace (i.e. not to be harassed or griefed). See previous point for owners' options at getting rid of unwanted (remnant) guests.
* Outside of the player station safe zone is "fair game", however camping just outside of the safe zone and then attacking the moment the victim gets out of the safe zone is not ok. These cases will be handled case-by-case by moderators.
* Non-owners are not allowed to e.g. leave ships with transponders in the safe zone (essentially revealing the location of the station to other players)

Tip to station owners: If you find non-active unwanted guests in your safe zone, and pushing is unfeasible, you can consider unclaiming your station (removing the safe zone), destroying the ship, and reclaiming your station. Be careful though, as enemy ships may be lurking in the shadows...
Because Starbase is under constant development, balance changes may occur to either direction - sometimes it may be easier for players to remain protected, and sometimes it may be hard to keep alive.

== Blueprint sharing ==
== Note on griefing ==

Starbase ships and stations use blueprints. Blueprints are valuable as they tell how a ship has been designed and can be used to manufacture said ship. These rules are meant to govern blueprints and sharing of ship designs.
Repeated actions against the same player(s) over and over again is griefing. We will deal with griefing on a case-by-case basis.

We cannot cover all possible outcomes with rules so please do report or get in touch with CMs if your case doesn't fall into these.
Any other intentional hampering of other players is also handled case-by-case, however it should go without saying that deliberately hindering others' experience is not advisable and will be punishable. This would include e.g. blocking ships or buildings on Origin and other such actions.

=== Technical explanation of blueprint sharing ===
== Blueprint sharing ==

Blueprint sharing technical explanation (Closed Alpha):
* Blueprints cannot be shared ingame (yet)
* Blueprints can be obtained in two ways:
# From the ship design author who joins your Ship Designer session in Group Editing and spawns the ship, allowing you to save the blueprint similarly to the author itself
# Outside of the game by sharing the .fbe files (in %APPDATA%\Starbase\ssc\autosave\ship_blueprints folder)

'''Current workaround for sharing ships'''

If you don't want to share the actual blueprint, it's possible to share ships by "decommissioning" them. This allows somebody else (e.g. company member) to claim the ship without getting access to the blueprint.

=== Blueprint sharing rules ===

'''General blueprint sharing rules:'''

* A) Only authors can share blueprints publicly (or anybody with an ''explicit'' permission from the author, proof of which is on the person sharing the blueprint; so by default do not share blueprints even if you got it from "somewhere" unless the author has personally said it's ok for YOU to share it)

'''Faction blueprint sharing rules:'''

* A) General rules apply
* B) Factions are responsible for their own blueprints (using whatever ownership/distribution gateways they need until the game has support for proper sharing)

Public sharing means the main Starbase Discord AND any private servers. Do not share a blueprint anywhere unless you're the author or have explicit permission!

=== Tips for factions ===

In the future factions will get blueprint sharing features. Right now, for factions who do major ship development (new designs), we recommend the following:
# Keep ship designs limited to only the highest-ranking members
# Don't share in Discord or at least in channels that aren't limited to a carefully selected group

=== Download and using blueprints ===

Receiving/downloading (illegally shared) blueprints is not a punishable offense, but re-distributing them is.

=== Reporting unauthorized sharing ===

Users who receive offers to download blueprints and suspect foul play (unauthorized distribution) are encouraged (but not required) to get in touch with the Community Managers. Please provide screenshots/other evidence if possible.
Starbase ships and stations use blueprints. Blueprints are valuable as they tell how a ship has been designed and can be used to manufacture said ship.

=== Future features ===
In the near future we will have various blueprint gameplay features such as Secure Blueprint Chip. These gameplay features will govern the use of blueprints.

* "Protected" blueprint chip (coming soon)
In the meantime, we discourage any and all use of blueprint sharing. You share blueprints at your own risk. We will not take any part in users' blueprints. However we will keep our official Discord free of any blueprints (but this won't apply to DMs or other servers). '''TAKE CARE OF YOUR BLUEPRINTS.'''
** Chip can save and use a copy of a blueprint but cannot open it (great for sharing a ship to company/faction members "securely" so it cannot be edited but can be used/spawned in-world)
* Company features (coming soon)
** Companies can set their rules for ship ownership
** Sharing ships without sharing the blueprint

We recommend the following for big factions:
* Wait for the gameplay features (see [[Roadmap]])
* Share individual Ship Access through the Ship Access feature under Company
* Share individual ships by Decommissioning them (Possessions -> Ships -> Decommission)
** This allows anybody else, including a company member, to claim the ship freely
* Do not share blueprint files with anybody. It will lead to misery.
** It is your own responsibility to keep them secure and developers will not take any part in securing them for you if they leak.

Gameplay rules

Starbase is under constant development. As new features come in, we may add or remove gameplay rules related to them. Rules are not set in stone, they are ever changing. In the ideal case no additional rules would be needed at all, and that is the development goal. In the mean time, some rules clarify our development intent, and they are listed here.

Last updated: 10 August 2021

Origin chat advertising

Note on PvP and new player protection

Generally speaking we (the development team) want to protect new players and get them on their space journey without additional burden (the game is hard enough to learn as it is). We want to encourage players to take risks with their possessions to gain something - venturing out into the deeper space with their fancy mining ship in hopes of returning with a big ore payload. If something happens on that journey, well, that's the risk part.

Because Starbase is under constant development, balance changes may occur to either direction - sometimes it may be easier for players to remain protected, and sometimes it may be hard to keep alive.

Note on griefing

Repeated actions against the same player(s) over and over again is griefing. We will deal with griefing on a case-by-case basis.

Any other intentional hampering of other players is also handled case-by-case, however it should go without saying that deliberately hindering others' experience is not advisable and will be punishable. This would include e.g. blocking ships or buildings on Origin and other such actions.

Griefing examples

Ramming inside safe zones: Safe zones protect ships from breaking. However deliberate ramming within safe zones is not allowed. Blaming bad piloting works once, but if you repeatedly hit other ships, that's ramming and a punishable action.

Blueprint sharing

Starbase ships and stations use blueprints. Blueprints are valuable as they tell how a ship has been designed and can be used to manufacture said ship.

In the near future we will have various blueprint gameplay features such as Secure Blueprint Chip. These gameplay features will govern the use of blueprints.

In the meantime, we discourage any and all use of blueprint sharing. You share blueprints at your own risk. We will not take any part in users' blueprints. However we will keep our official Discord free of any blueprints (but this won't apply to DMs or other servers). TAKE CARE OF YOUR BLUEPRINTS.

We recommend the following for big factions:

  • Wait for the gameplay features (see Roadmap)
  • Share individual Ship Access through the Ship Access feature under Company
  • Share individual ships by Decommissioning them (Possessions -> Ships -> Decommission)
    • This allows anybody else, including a company member, to claim the ship freely
  • Do not share blueprint files with anybody. It will lead to misery.
    • It is your own responsibility to keep them secure and developers will not take any part in securing them for you if they leak.
